Jewellyn Alvares has a bespoke format for women’s wear, for men, it is ready-to-wear, writes Meher Castelino
When a person loves his profession, he is completely devoted to it. Jewellyn Alvares loves fashion and literally breathes, eats and sleeps his profession. So little wonder that after graduating from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru in 2001, he followed it up with a Masters from Nottingham Trent University, UK in 2017.
He started his company ‘Jule’ and launched his label “Jewellyn Alvares” with his bridal segment called “Jule Bridal” immediately after graduating in 2001, which isn’t something designers are advised to do, but he was an instant success.
Inspired by nature, music, travel and even food, his bridal wear, cocktail dresses, Red Carpet gowns and ensembles for the entourage are created in luxurious taffeta, Duchess satin, raw silk, georgette, chiffon and priced from Rs 35,000 upward. Jewellyn uses ornate jewel tones for the formal evening wear; while white is the favoured colour for the wedding gowns. The embellishments are luxurious with surface texturing, ornamentation, layers, beading and appliqués being Jewellyn’s forte.
At Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2018, Jewellyn launched his ready-to-wear menswear line, which was totally off-the-beaten track giving men some exciting unconventional fashion options. The silhouettes are lean and structured with an emphasis on the collars as well as construction. Using indigenous handwoven fabrics, the men’s wear starts at Rs 25,000.
For women’s wear it’s a bespoke format, while for men’s it is a ready-to-wear line that will be available from October at top Mumbai stores. Jewellyn sees clients from 10.30 am to 7.30 pm by appointment only.
His love for fashion does not only stay within the designing realms, but Jewellyn’s parallel career as a teacher at Pearl Academy of Fashion, Mumbai is very fulfilling as it keeps him updated and constantly in touch with the profession that is his first love.
