When the beauty of textiles surrounds a person, the most logical step is to move to fashion designing. That is exactly what Saloni Sakaria did, having observed her father’s 30-year-old textile business since childhood. After graduating in March 2017 from Sophia Polytechnic in Mumbai, Saloni immediately launched her quirkily-titled label ‘The Third Floor Clothing’ and showcased it at the Amazon India Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2018 in October 2017 – a bold decision since many fresh graduates would prefer to gain experience in the industry before taking the daring step into the ‘Rag Race’ within just six months of finishing the fashion course.
This daring adventure however got her noticed and she was one of the four designers selected to promote Khadi for the Khadi and Village Industries Commission opening show for the Sustainable Fashion Day during Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2018.
Her inspirations normally revolve around the designing process. The Khadi collection was just up her street since she has loved the fabric for her personal wardrobe and even while studying, the ‘Fabric of Freedom’ was her inspiration for many of her designs. Her other favoured fabrics are linen, silk, organza, tussar and Chanderi, which give her creations a fluid flow. Solid tones are her first choice with a hint of prints and she loves presenting dual designs on the ramp in monotones.
Saloni’s career graph is in ‘blast off’ mode now with her target customers being women between 21 to 55 years age, but she admits she is till in the process of figuring out how to offer something that will appeal to the entire age group; while her creations however have a marked young vibe.
Selling through stores in Mumbai, Saloni is set to launch her e-commerce site by end 2018. In a span of just a year in the fashion business Saloni’s rise has been surprising even to her, but the lady thinks fast and moves with lightening speed. After celebrating her first anniversay in the industry, Saloni is all set to launch her men’s wear label.
Her terms of business are quite clear – with stockists it’s consignment as well as buyout with not more than 40 per cent mark down. With customers it is full advance payment (considering the customers’ terms) since the label does make-to-order. Available from 11 am to 7 pm, the price range is between Rs 3,000 to Rs 20,000 and The Third Floor Label is available at Amortela, Chennai, Saahra, New Delhi, The Loom (Website) as well as from her office in Byculla Mumbai.
