When Akshat Bansal presented his label “Bloni” (B for Bansal and Loni his pet name = Bloni) at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2017 Gen Next show there was no doubt this young designer would go a long way. His design foundation was solid. His graduating collection at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Mumbai in 2013 called ‘Transmuted Anatomy’ won the Meher Castelino Most Innovative Garment Construction award.

After that it was Central St Martins London, followed by an apprenticeship on Savile Row and then a stint with Tarun Tahiliani, Dolly J, Bada Saab, Cad and Dandy London that encouraged him to make his second fashion week appearance with his Summer/Resort 2017 line called ‘Mourning of the Marine Life’. It was a black-and-white androgynous look with strong construction and impeccable finish. For 2018 his “Neutral Human” creations sent a tough Agender, sustainable message to eliminate plastic and instead go for econyl, wool and organza.

Akshat’s colour palette remains true to black-and-white with hints of grey. His favoured fabrics are Chanderi, crepe wool and suiting as well as sustainable fabrics made from 100 per cent regenerated marine plastic waste that often causes havoc in landfills or oceans. Detailing plays an important role with faggotted seams being a constant, while tie and dye appears for most of his clothes. The garments are made using age-old hand techniques and delivered with an intimate touch, which gives individual identities a sharper and stronger voice.

Creating four collections a year, Akshat ensures that alternate lines are showcased at fashion weeks. His showroom, which opened in September 2018, is at 18 Dhan Mill Compound, Chattarpur, New Delhi, 110074 while his atelier is also at Chattarpur Village. Business hours are from 11 am to 7 pm and Akshat only does an outright purchase deal or consignment on 50 per cent advance, B2B, B2C for retail. Prices at his flagship store are between Rs 7,500 – Rs 67,000 and his outlet in Mumbai is Aza.

Akshat wants his designs to ease clients into expanding their comfort zone, evolving and expressing themselves better. Fashion should transcend functionality and creativity to define new perspectives. With Bloni, Akshat Bansal, Creative Director of the company who advocates gender-neutral clothes; hopes to encourage an unconventional approach and believes in developing and nurturing ideas.
