Prompt and good service, Sancho's is Mexican and welcoming, writes Tara Bose Kapur
The new Mexican eatery was buzzing when we visited a mere week after its launch. It was impossible to reserve a table for lunch but the very helpful girl manning reservations offered to seat us at the bar, subject to seat availability. So, undaunted we went and found it to be full but managed to snag the last two bar stools!
It’s opened where Nido’s and the Korner House were. The area has been transformed, by opening it up, removing the walls and making it one large two-level space. Designed by Gauri Khan, it’s chic, contemporary, Mexican and welcoming.
The spacious room with high ceilings, a bar and an alfresco area is done up with Mexican-themed artefacts – thick worn Mexican rugs, mirrors with gilded crevasses and Frida Kahlo-like art.
Here’s what we ordered:
Rags to Riches Guacamole (Yum!)
Served with what looked like blue corn chips, we got two refills of guacamole complimentary and ate it with our lamb chops
Lamb Barbacoa Tacos
Cowboy Lamb Pops
This was excellent. Served with mashed potatoes, the 2 lamb chops are lovely – meaty and seasoned just right. So good we had to have another portion
UV’s Famous Tres Leche Cake (Awesome!)
Prompt and good service. I’m going to return soon.
Xico, you’ve got stiff competition. The one-year-old Kamala Mills Mexican restaurant has a fun, party Mexican vibe and excellent food. Helmed by Chef Jason Hudanish from Miami who chats with customers and can quickly suggest items on or off menu as per your taste. I love it for the live guac made fresh in front of you.
The reason why I totally enjoyed Sancho’s is the elegant and inclusive vibe… I saw the usual middle-aged ‘ladies who lunch’, couples of all ages, families, PYTs as well as large groups.
It’s not a hoity-toity place and the all-day timings mean you can go anytime. I’m actually planning to return for cocktails with the husband as well as coffee with friends.
All this coupled with good food and the friendly price points means it will attract a regular clientele.
