The holy month of Shravan, the fifth month of the year as per the Hindu calendar, is when devout Hindus turn vegetarian, many fast on Mondays and Saturdays. Lighter, less oily and spicy food, is generally eaten, but there is no compromise on taste and flavours. Sabudana (sago), potato, Rajgira (Amaranth) and Sinhghada (Indian water chestnut) are commonly used in preparing Shravan food.

Many restaurants in Mumbai offer Shravan delicacies. You don’t have to be fasting to enjoy these special “upvas” dishes, Go soon. Shravan’s set to come to an end in early September, but most of these restaurants serve Upwas food through the year

Must eat here is the Farali Pattice, the melt-in-the-mouth, Gujarati delicacy made of potato, with a crisp coating.

The Farali Masala Dosa here is a must-have. Stuffed with oiled peanuts, Aloo Bhaji and Sabudana Khichdi

Aaswad, Dadar West
Try out the Sabudana Puri and the Upwas Misal, they’re delicious

Diva Maharashtracha, Mahim
Don’t miss the Sabudana Vada, have it with sweetened curd… delicious
