It’s Amitabh Bachchan’s birthday today (October 11). Rather than do a life-and-times profile of his, we chose to do a hat ké, out-of-the-box quiz on the music that the megastar has been filmed on. Our music expert Narendra Kusnur went a step forward, and compiled KBC-like quiz… as if the Big B was conducting it. Read on…
Namaskar deviyon aur sajanon, main Amitabh Bachchan bol raha hoon Kaun Banega Crorepati se. Mere janamdin ke avsar par… On the occasion of my birthday, we decided to do a music quiz.
Jaise aap jaante ho, we begin with the fastest fingers first round. This time, we decided to do something different. My team felt I should choose 10 of my favourite songs from my films. So we sent out online questions to 500 random people in our database. The winner would get a chance to be in the hotseat and if he or she answers the 10 questions correctly, we would present plenty of gift hampers. Otherwise we go to the next candidate and so on. If nobody answers all, we choose the person with the maximum correct entries.
Ab dus gaano ko chunna mushkil tha. From some 500. But I gave it a shot. Deviyon aur sajanon, shuru karein? (Crowd yells haanji). Computer Ji, taiyyar ho? (Beep Beep).
So let’s welcome this lady from Alwar, Rajasthan. (Bachchan helps her settle in her chair before looking at his computer screen. She is dressed in a Kota bagru print saree, with sindoor, large bindi and lots of lac bangles besides a huge nose stud). The rest of the conversation will be a dialogue between the two.)
AB: Aapka bahut sundar naam hai – Sharon Sunny Sherawat. Is that your real name?
SSS: No ji. My real good name is Roop Kumari Singh. But I want to become film hero so choose this name.
AB: You seem to be knowledgeable about my songs.
SSS: I been your phane before I was born.
AB: Let’s begin the quiz. You know the rules and you know the lifelines. But before that, let’s take a short commercial break.

AB: Bahut badhiya khel rahi hai Sunny Ji. But before we proceed to last three questions, a short break.
AB: Deviyon aur sajanon, aapka phir se swaagat hai to this special musical episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati, held to celebrate my birthday. SSS: Have come so far. Kyon aisa kar rahe ho ji? Can I ask the expert? Music journalist called Narendra Kusnur (calls up and Kusnur does a quick Google search which nobody can see). It is Autumn Leaves. Option B.
AB: Computer Ji agrees (everyone claps). So we enter the last round. The final question. Who composed the music of ‘Manzilein Apni Jagah Hai’ from Sharaabi. A – Naushad B – Shankar Ehsaan Loy C Bappi Lahiri D – Amaal Malik.

AB: Jeete raho. By the way the right answer to the last question was Bappi Lahiri.
SSS: Ainnnnnn (faints)
Narendra Kusnur is one of India’s best known music journalists. Born with a musical spoon (okay, doesn’t fit, but you get the drift), Naren, NK, Kusnur, Narender, Kaansen, Jahanpanna… however else many call him, is a late bloomer in music criticism. He was (is!) an aficionado first, and then strayed into writing on music. But in the last two decades, he has made up for most of what he didn’t do earlier. If ever there is an Ustad given for music writing, NK, would be among the first to receive one. Narendra Kusnur writes weekly on Xyngr. Don’t ask us when.
