Shop till you drop for Denim Jeans. Well, not everywhere

Who doesn’t want to get fashion’s favourite labels at a discount price? January is the month for sales and a walk through Phoenix Mall, Lower Parel is like heaven for shoppers. This week, let’s concentrate on denim jeans – where to get what, and at what price. The Sale Season is on full blast but are the discounts attracting shoppers?

    PEPE

This is a trusted brand with a sale sign outside that will hypnotise you into walking in. The prices for ladies and men’s denim jeans are between Rs 2,500 and 6,000. If the prices give you a hiccup, it’s considered cheap compared to the ones that are listed below. Service is a little slack in the store and the knowledge of the staff regarding the products quite vague. Ask about the denim weight used and different washes are pointed out.

    CELIO

This brand launched in 2010 started out as a man’s shirts and trousers label but has added a section for denim jeans and located right opposite Pepe, there seems to be some healthy rivalry with price tags being between Rs 2,000 and 4,000. While the staff highlighted the jean’s soft touch denim, once again that was the only aspect they were aware of. With an international customer profile of the mall, it was a pity some staff only conversed in Hindi.

    LEVI’S

Here is a brand nearly everyone wants to own. Footfalls on a Monday evening were slow so a cluster of staff (?) was chatting, though the alert sales girl did give the prices for ladies jeans that were tagged between Rs 2,700 and 4,600 and men’s Rs 3,700 and 5,600. Enthusiasm to sell was a bit low as a wave of the arm indicated that there were different styles and washes to suit all requirements. Ah, well, when a brand has history and a 7-Star global reputation, why make an attempt to sell to a casual walk-in customer.

    GAS

This Italian brand came into India under the Raymond umbrella in 2006, retreated three years later and came back again in 2012 as part of the Reliance stable of foreign labels. The store was devoid of customers in the evening but the charming sales girl was quite happy to answer questions on the denim jeans and even knew about the fabrics! The prices may raise eyebrows – ladies jeans between Rs 6,000 to Rs 16,000 and men’s are priced at Rs 7,000 to 16,000. But the 300 ounces a denim super soft version priced at Rs 10,000 was a garment one may want to start saving for. Here was denim that had ultra comfort and style without the stiff heavy canvas-tent-like feel.

    DIESEL

This is supposed to be the ultimate denim jeans label that people long to own. It was once again a lean time for business so the friendly sales girl didn’t mind sparing a few minutes chatting about the garments. Prices are heart stopping (hope the sale price is lower!). Ladies jeans are between Rs 10,000 to Rs 18,000 and men’s between Rs 14,000 and Rs 35,000. The men’s lightweight denim jeans had a lighter tag of Rs 13,990. What seem quite interesting were the Jog Jeans variety which look like denim but isn’t, but the price for ladies and men’s options here will make one gasp at Rs 17,000 to Rs 35,000.
